Koh Samui’s Seasons:

Although weather patterns seem to be less predictable these days, Koh Samui still has three seasons. February to May is the hot and dry season with peak daytime temperatures that can reach 40°C with little rain, except for short, but heavy cloudbursts. This weather is just perfect to spend some days on the beach or a boat, although winds – usually blowing from the east, can be a bit sluggish and will often not provide enough of a cooling breeze to offer relief a sun baked body desires. This is the time to spend in the sea or pool, or in fan distance with a cooling drink in hand.

Typically, June to September brings more tropical rain showers, offering a short, welcome breather from the heat of the day and is unlikely to become inconvenient, typically lasting no longer than an hour. Daytime temperatures are in the high twenties while the humidity is rather low, at least compared to other places in Thailand at this time of the year. The sea is generally calm and smooth, very good conditions for kayakers if not too bothered by the frequent late afternoon showers. Note that Koh Samui is located off the east coast of Thailand, and therefore shielded from the south-eastern monsoon hammering Thailand’s Andaman coastal resorts of Phuket, Phi Phi, and Krabi during this period.

Koh Samui’s monsoon season starts in October often with torrential rainfall. Strong winds of around 20 knots and waves up to 2 meters from the east can occur. This weather is caused by the north-east monsoon coming down from China. Luckily, the so called rainy season here occurs in periods of 3-4 wet days followed by a few friendly, drier ones, so it’s still possible to find a good window for relaxing on the beach. November can also be rather wet with temperatures dropping to the low twenties at night – quite cold by local standards. The heavy rain and flooding usually comes to an end in early December. The wind still blows from the east, bringing up some surf to the east coast. Fortunately the bays of Bophut, Maenam, Bang Rak and Big Buddha together with those of Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam on the western side of the island are somewhat sheltered from the elements at that time.

Rainfall in Koh Samui varies over the course of the year from 11 mm to 269 mm per month. On average most rain falls during the months of November (269mm) and October (254mm). February and March are usually the driest months. (Rainfall in February 11mm and in March 25mm).
Daily average temperatures in Koh Samui range from 25.3°C to 28.1°C. Although the temperature can peak at around 40°C usually in April, the statistical average for the hottest months remain below 30°C (average 28.1°C) and March (average 27.5°C). Average temperatures decline in December to 25.3°C and in January to 25.5°C.
