West coast: Baan Taling Ngam & Lipa Noi

A short distance south of Nathon, Lipa Noi is close to Koh Samui’s Royal Thai Navy base at Laem Chon Khran and the Raja car ferry terminal for mainland Donsak port.  Despite its shipping activity, Lipa Noi can boast one of the best beaches on the island for kids. The sand is fine and soft, there are no rocks or coral in the water, and the sea is clear and shallow for up to 100 metres out. However, with little in the way of shopping or entertainment, the relative solitude will probably drive them (and you) potty, after a few days.

A little further south, past the naval and ferry facilities,Taling Ngam’s  Five Islands Beach offers exceptional views of the islands and memorable sunsets, as a backdrop to the Ang Thong Marine National Park’s many islands. Much like Lipa Noi, the beach here is fantastic.

The west coast is a beautiful and secluded area of Koh Samui, but considered too remote from the island’s established entertainment resorts to become a popular destination for the majority of the island’s younger visitors. But it is the very remoteness of the west coast that makes it most attractive to many visitors who return here year after year. Regular tourists to the west coast tend to be older than you’ll find elsewhere on the island, and mainly comprised of retirees and families. Visitors should be prepared to become independent by either renting a car or come to an arrangement with a local taxi driver.  Shopping and entertainment distractions are very limited, so you’ll probably need to take off for Nathon or further afield on a regular basis.
