Traveling west from Bophut on Samui’s 51km long, circular, concrete ring road one soon reaches Maenam. In fact, so seamlessly do the two village’s recent construction merge, it’s difficult for the visitor to recognise a demarcation between the two. Maenam is long and sprawling. Its inland foothills contain many hidden bungalow compounds popular with resident expats and is the location of the excellent Santi Buri Country Club, a challenging mountainside, championship course. Landscaped on the mountain overlooking Maenam, each of the 18 holes on this 6,930 yards, par-72 course, has its own unique character and challenges. From steep uphill and downhill slopes to winding fairways that cut into the coconut plantations to cliffs and ball-devouring mountain creeks. Santi Buri claims to be uniquely challenging in Asia and remains Samui’s only 18 hole, golfers’ playground.
The short road to the pier and access to the beach from Maenam’s traffic lights contains several small shops and cafe’s. The pier itself is a departure point for Lomprayah’s high speed catamaran service to the neighbouring islands of Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao and onward, north west to mainland Chumpon.
Maenam Beach must be one of the most under-rated beaches on Koh Samui. It’s also the longest and probably takes a whole morning or more to walk it end to end and back. The waters are calm for much of the year and shallow for most of its length making this an attractive location for families with small children.
