Choeng Mon

Eastwards from Bophut and Bangrak, past Big Buddha and the airport turnoff, on the long way round to Chaweng, lies Choeng Mon. The cluster of small shops, bars and cafe’s that marked the hamlet of Choeng Mon on the main road have grown substantially in recent years and now offer much of what  is available a taxi ride away in Chaweng or Big Buddha. The area is only a 10 minutes drive north of Chaweng and about the same from Bophut, but because of the rocky and somewhat inaccessible coastline of the island’s north east corner, the beach – a short distance off the main road – remains quiet and the waters clean.  Choeng Mon possesses a small but magnificent bay, with a powdery, white sand beach.

A rock formation on one side and a small island and headland on the southern end define the bay. The long established Imperial Boathouse Hotel and several newer up market hotels occupy much of the beach frontage. Their restaurants and bars, together with a few remaining independent operators provide sustenance, and prevent visitors to the beach from going thirsty.
